Purpose:

We all have varied lived experiences, cultures, traditions, and beliefs. In our course (and others in your college career), you will encounter many topics and therefore, varied perspectives. This assignment is designed to center your voice and personal history as valuable so as to create a supportive and collaborative online learning environment. This will aid in fostering productive and lively discussion of various topics while honoring and celebrating each of our unique worldviews.

Step 1: Design your autobiography

Task:

For this assignment, I would like you to write an autobiography using written words and pictures. This means that you will share with us some details about your personal, ancestral, and cultural history. You may format this in any way that is authentic to you: you can number your responses to the questions below and include images, or you can compile your words and images into a presentation using Google Slides, PowerPoint, Prezi, Sway, Adobe Spark, YouTube, Canvas Studio, etc.

In your submission, please include textual descriptions and pictures to address the following:

Choose at least 8 of the following 12 questions to address in your autobiography:

      1. Who are you? Do you know who you are?
      2. What is your name? What is your preferred name (if different from your given name)? What does your name mean? Who named you? What do you know about your family’s cultural naming practices?
      3. What are your cultural identities? (Think about how cultural identities typically have beliefs, languages that are used, literature read and written, power structure/social organization, rites of passages, rituals, traditions, celebrations, practices and a history)
      4. How would you describe yourself to someone who didn’t know you?
      5. What would your other teachers say about you?
      6. What would your family say about you?
      7. What do you read, write, or think about in your home and community?
      8. How are people like you depicted in society and in the media?
      9. How might you describe your culture or ethnicity?
      10. Do you feel that my teaching reflects your culture? If yes, how? If not, how can it be improved?
      11. If you could take me somewhere to help me understand your culture/ethnicity, where would you take me?
      12. How would you describe your desired self (if this differs from your current self)? In other words, who do you hope to become? What do you hope to achieve?

Step 2: Submit your autobiography

Once you have designed your autobiography, you will submit it to this discussion assignment. To submit, click “Reply” underneath the instructions. Then, depending on how you formatted your discussion, you will do one of the following:

Step 3: Respond to your peers’ autobiographies

Your autobiography due Saturday by 11:59pm. Once you’ve posted, you will then respond to at least 3 peers by Sunday by 11:59pm.

Respond to THREE of your peers’ autobiographies, focusing on validating your peers’ cultural, ancestral, historical, and personal experiences and worldviews, highlighting what you learned from their narrative, and what you may have in common.

Be sure to address your peer in your response by their preferred name and sign your name at the end. Respond to three peers who have yet to receive a response by a classmate. If everyone’s autobiography has been responded to, respond to the ones with the least amount of responses. For example, if every student has at least one response, then respond to the students who only have one or two responses instead of those who have 5 or 6 already.
